Early Life

George, the priest, was born in Montgomery, Wales, on April 3, 1539 to Richard and Magdalen. George’s father, Richard, was a member of parliament and a justice of the peace. He also served as a high sheriff and later the keeper of the rolls of Montgomeryshire. His mother, on the other end, was a patron. 

At the age of 12 years, Herbert joined Westminster School. He started as a day pupil before becoming a residential student. Later on, George went to Trinity College, Cambridge, under a scholarship. He earned his Bachelor’s degree before enrolling for a master’s degree, which he received, which he received in 1616. 

Personal Life

After resigning as an orator, Herbert met Jane Danvers. The two became a thing and were married in 1629. 

Career

After graduating from college, George, the orator got his first appointment (Reader) at Cambridge. Later on, he was posted as a public orator. After several years of service, George found his way into the parliament and started working as a representative. After serving in the parliament for some time, he sought to start his priesthood, joining a small parish in the rural areas. 

He lived there, still writing poetry and helping with the rebuilding of the church. The priest kept writing poetry in Latin, English, and Greek until the time of his death. Before meeting his death, George used wrote and sent poems to Nicholas Ferrar. In return, Nicholas featured all of George’s poems in The Temple magazine. 

Death

Herbert’s life as a priest was short as he died three years after the appointment. He died in 1633 after suffering from poor health.
