John Calvin Coolidge Jr. is popularly known for holding office as the 30th president of the US from 1923 to 1929.
Early Life
Calvin Coolidge or ‘Silent Calvin,’ as termed by many was born in Plymouth North Vermont. Calvin was born in a family of three (as the elder brother). His father was a jack of many trades and engaged in activities such as farming, storekeeping and public service. Calvin’s father held a position in offices such as the Vermont House of Representatives, as well as the Senate.
His mother, on the other end, was a farmer’s daughter and died while Calvin was only 12 years. His father remarried a schoolteacher with whom he enjoyed life until his 80s when he died. Coolidge’s younger sister also died from appendicitis when the politician was 18 years of age.
Calvin’s earliest ancestors migrated from England leaving him with a deep root in New England. The 30th President of America, Calvin schooled at Amherst College in Massachusetts. Later, Carl practiced law in Northampton before being admitted to the bar in 1897.
Personal Life
In 1905, Calvin met Grace Anna Goodhue who would turn out to be the lover of his life. Grace was a teacher at a deaf’s school and was ultimately the opposite of Calvin. She was talkative and social, while Calvin was known for his silence and seriousness. However, the couple formed a happy and fruitful marriage.
Career
Calvin’s career started as a lawyer when he opened his law firm in 1898. In the same year, Calvin was elected to the Northampton City Council. Later, Calvin moved to the solicitor’s offices before becoming the clerk in the courts of Northampton. In 1906, the successful lawyer was appointed as a Progressive Republican to the Massachusetts House.
Calvin went ahead to take a mayor’s position in Northampton before returning to the legislature to serve in the Senate. Around 1918, Calvin’s prominence saw him become the lieutenant governor and then the governor. His tenure as a governor saw Calvin gain national attention and thus a nomination as the Vice President.
Calvin served under Warren G. Harding attending cabinet meetings, giving speeches and many Washington parties. In late 1923, President Harding died, and this saw Calvin sworn in as the President. In 1924, Coolidge was nominated for Presidency and won despite having lost his son during the campaign period.
Death
On January 5th, 1933, news about Coolidge’s death hit the headline news. He died from coronary thrombosis while at his home in Northampton. He was 60 years during his death.
